ALD News: One week to go until Ada Lovelace Day!
Celebrating women in STEM with our fabulous live event, our blog post extravaganza and a look at a century of female speakers at the Royal Institution.
Hi there,
Ada Lovelace Day 2023, our 15th celebration and our first in-person event since 2019, is just a week away!
Seven days to go!
Yes, there are just seven days to go until Ada Lovelace Day Live kicks off at the Royal Institution. We have an amazing line-up of speakers, not to mention a cash bar, book stall and Dr Aarathi Prasad signing copies of her new book, Silk: A History in Three Metamorphoses!
It’s not too late to pick up your own tickets, whether to come in person so that you can soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the Ri’s iconic Theatre, or watch online with friends, family or colleagues, on your sofa or at your own watch party.
Here’s a reminder of our fabulous speakers:
Prof Jennifer Rohn – Why we should all be angrier about urinary tract infection
Urinary tract infection is incredibly common, yet hard to diagnose and treat. We’ll delve into the science behind an under-researched, routinely missed and frequently dismissed affliction that affects millions.
Dr Anjana Khatwa – The Jurassic Coast: Take a leap into deep time
The Jurassic Coast showcases 185m years of Earth history, telling of hot deserts, deep seas and tropical swamps. What can we learn from this unique place, where every step is a leap through deep time?
Dr Sophie Carr – Uncertainty, intuition, and superheroes
In a world riddled with uncertainty, our unease is undeniable, but within each of us lies a superpower we can unleash to transform discomfort into confidence.
Dr Aarathi Prasad – Silk
Among those who discovered the secrets of silk-producing animals are women who investigated their history, natural history, and developed technological applications of a material that has fascinated the world for millennia.
Dr Azza Eltraify – Greening the ICT world
Greening the ICT sector has emerged as a vital aspect to balance technological advancement with environmental sustainability by adopting energy-efficient technologies and practices such as eco-design and eco e-waste management.
Dr Antonia Pontiki – 3D printing artificial organs
3D printed anatomical models can benefit surgeons in improving their skills and confidence in surgery, as well as provide patients with advanced surgical techniques and hence better quality of life.
Rosie Curran Crawley – Women of wonder
Inspired by Jane Marcet’s Conversations on Chemistry, Rosie discusses the importance of relatable and exciting women role models in making science accessible… with the help of a few explosions!
Online women in STEM extravaganza
Once again, we are going to be publishing a blog post every hour throughout the day about a woman in STEM or a book by or about women in STEM! You’ll be able to read all the blog posts on our website, or watch out for our posts on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
We will be featuring some brilliant women who have changed our understanding of the world, who have worked towards solving some of the most serious challenges facing humanity, and whose contributions have improved the lives of millions. So if you don’t already follow us on social media, now’s the time to sign up!
If you want a taster of the kinds of posts we’ll be publishing, just take a look at some of the profiles we published last year, which are available now on our Substack.
A century of women at the Royal Institution
It’s 100 years since archaeologist Joan Evans, an expert in English jewellery from the fifth to the 17th centuries, gave the first ever talk by a woman at the Royal Institution, making it the perfect venue for the 15th Ada Lovelace Day.
Ada Lovelace attended lectures at the Ri as well, and it has since hosted a wide variety of female experts, from physicists to neuroscientists to mathematicians. So if the seven fabulous women speaking at Ada Lovelace Day aren’t enough for you, then why not explore some of the Ri’s lectures, articles and podcasts by and about women in STEM?

Can you say what time the talks will start, and what time they are expected to finish? I can't come for all of the time, but want to make sure I'm not barging in & out in the middle of talks!
